UK Student Visa Overview
If you’re 16 or older and aspire to pursue further or higher education in the UK, the UK Student Visa is tailor-made for you.
However, those aged between 4 and 17 seeking education in an independent school should instead consider the Child Student Visa.
Eligibility Criteria for the UK Student Visa
To be granted a UK Student Visa, the UK Visas and Immigration authority demands:
- Age confirmation of 16 or above.
- An unconditional course offer from a recognised student sponsor.
- English proficiency: CEFR Level B2 for degree-level studies or CEFR Level B1 for sub-degree level studies.
- Sufficient funds for self-sustenance and tuition, with no dependency on public funds.
- Parental or guardian consent for applicants aged 16 or 17.
Individual circumstances might alter the specifics of these requirements. For comprehensive guidance, consulting an immigration solicitor is recommended.

Barring exceptions, all studies must be conducted at your student sponsor’s venue or an associated institution.

Upon receiving an unconditional course offer, a CAS reference number will be provided by your educational institution. Ensure your Student Visa application is filed within 6 months of CAS receipt.
Financial Requirements for UK Student Visa
A detailed breakdown, encompassing course fees and living costs, is vital. Specific cash reserves are essential, including funds for course fees and UK living costs, with varying stipulations based on your location of study.
Special Provisions
Certain applicants, based on their status or nationality, may have distinct financial requirements.
UK Student Visa: English Proficiency
The English language proficiency standards are set at CEFR Level B2 for degree-level and CEFR Level B1 for sub-degree courses. Approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT) or certain exemptions apply.
Genuine Student Verification
Most applicants undergo interviews to ensure their genuine intention to study in the UK.
Transitioning to the Student Route
Existing UK residents can switch to the Student route under certain conditions.
How to Apply
Those outside the UK must apply a maximum of 6 months prior to their course’s commencement. In contrast, domestic applications should be made 3 months before the course start date.
Processing Times for the UK Student Visa
Overseas applications usually receive responses within 3 weeks, while domestic applications have an 8-week processing time.
Arriving in the UK on a Student Visa
Course duration dictates the permissible pre-course arrival period.
Duration of Residency on a UK Student Visa
Course level and type dictate the permitted duration, with certain exemptions available.
Employment Permissions on a Student Visa
Study level dictates permitted work hours, with restrictions varying based on full-time or part-time course enrolment.
Dependent Family Criteria for Courses Before 1 January 2024
Eligible students who can bring a dependent partner or child to the UK encompass:
- Full-time postgraduate students (RQF level 7 or above) on courses spanning 9 months or more.
- Fresh government-sponsored students on courses extending beyond 6 months.
- Students under the Doctorate Extension Scheme.
For dependents accompanying students in London-based courses, a monthly allowance of £845 (for a maximum of 9 months) is required. Alternatively, for courses outside London, the stipulated amount is £680 monthly (up to 9 months).
This fund should be secured for 28 consecutive days and shouldn’t be more than 31 days old at the time of the dependent visa application.
Notably, partners and children with a UK visa valid for over 12 months, or those from ‘differential evidence requirement’ nations (when the primary applicant applies concurrently), are exempted from this maintenance funds criterion.
Dependent Provisions for Courses Starting 1 January 2024 Onwards
As of 1 January 2024, international students beginning their courses can’t bring dependents to the UK. However, an exception exists for students pursuing PhDs, doctoral qualifications, or certain research-focused higher degrees as per Immigration Rules. Such students retain the right to bring dependents post this date.
Existing student dependents in the UK can seek an extension for their stay.
Continuing Your Education in the UK
If you’re in the UK under the Student or Tier 4 (General) Student visa, an extension on the Student route might be possible. Concurrent extensions for dependents are also viable. Certain criteria, including course placement and academic level progression, need to be met. Financial stability proof is crucial for individuals with a UK visa less than 12 months old.
Permanent Residency Avenues for Students
While the Student visa route isn’t directly linked to permanent UK residency, transitioning to other immigration pathways can eventually lead to settlement.
Transitioning from Student Visa to Employment Paths
Degree-level or above students can explore switching to sponsored employment routes before their course conclusion. Those pursuing PhDs can consider work routes post 24 months of their study. Several work routes are available, including Skilled Worker, Senior Worker, Innovator Founder, and many more.
