Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange Visa

The UK Government Authorised Exchange Visa allows individuals to stay in the UK for either 12 or 24 months. This visa enables participation in authorised internships, training programmes, work experience, or research activities.

This visa does not lead to permanent settlement. However, those on this visa can have their dependent partners and children under 18 accompany them.

Qualifications for the UK Government Authorised Exchange Visa:
To be eligible, applicants must convince the UK Visas and Immigration department of the following:

  • Holding a valid Certificate of Sponsorship for your intended role from a recognised overarching body that has a valid license for this visa category.
  • The role aligns with an approved Government Authorised Exchange scheme.
  • The role isn’t replacing a UK workforce position.
  • The role is listed either in Table 1 or Table 2 of the Appendix Skilled Occupations.
  • Adequate personal funds for self-support in the UK.
  • No grounds for application refusal.
  • A valid TB certificate (when necessary).

The specific criteria may differ based on individual situations. Hence, consulting an immigration solicitor might be beneficial.

Certificate of Sponsorship for the Visa:

Your sponsoring body should:

  • Possess a relevant license.
  • Be authorised for the specific scheme you’re joining.
  • Be the primary entity responsible for your desired programme.
  • Be A-rated on the Home Office’s list, unless you’re continuing with the same sponsor from a previous visa.

The certificate must be recent (not more than 3 months old) and must include specifics such as your details, job, salary, and other mandatory data.

Genuine Job Assurance:
Applicants must demonstrate a genuine intent and capability to undertake their sponsored role without plans for other employment.

Financial and English Language Requirements:
Applicants should have at least £1,270 for at least 28 days, ending within 31 days before the application unless exceptions apply. There’s no English language test for this visa.

Consent for Minors:
Applicants below 18 must provide written parental or guardian consent for their application, accommodation, and travel arrangements.

Visa Duration:
The visa duration aligns with the Certificate of Sponsorship plus an additional 14 days before and after. Extensions are possible based on specific conditions.

Extensions and Settlement:
Extension periods align with the chosen scheme, either 12 or 24 months. Though this visa isn’t a direct route to permanent settlement, switching to another immigration route might be an option.

Switching Categories:
Switching within the UK is generally restricted, with exceptions for certain student categories.

Visa Conditions:
Successful applicants can work for their sponsor and partake in volunteering, shadowing, supplementary work, and studies. Access to public funds is restricted.

Processing Times:
Most visa decisions come within 3 weeks, with expedited options available. Extensions typically take 8 weeks, but faster options exist.

Dependents and Refusals:
Dependent partners and children below 18 can accompany the main applicant. If refused, a fresh application or Administrative Review might be possible.
